A GLIMPSE OF GLORY Luke 9:28-36 From some aspects this was the highest point in our Savior's (10-17) Peter's testimony to Christ, Self-denial enjoined. Jesus is in glory already, and they are with him. But as Buechner says, there are moments of transfiguration in all our lives. The accounts in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke are drawn from Marks, but there are some significant differences among them. Even Peter keeps his mouth shut. They will not understand Jesus prediction of his death and resurrection (18:31-34). It is those two men who appear on the mountain with Jesus and his companions. 5:14). And Terrifying. The glorification? Representing the Israel of old, they disappear, leaving Jesus alone (Fitzmyer, 795). So whats up with that? To see Gods glory provokes an intense response. Plus, weve got this little voice deep down inside of us that keeps telling us how important we are and how the world might fall apart if we werent here to keep it running smoothly. Commentators have long pointed out that Moses represented the Sinai Covenant/Law (as well as the Exodus) and that Elijah represented the prophetic voice of the Old Testament as well as Gods covenant faithfulness in sending servants to continue speaking to and ministering to even a wayward Israel. Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah (v. 30). That is a natural reaction. Commentary on Luke 9:28-36 [37-43] Lukes disciples need a revelatory experience in order to appreciate Jesus true identity and vocation. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. saves me time (retirement is just as busy as full time ministry) saves me money..(how quickly our libraries are dated!). The transfiguration of Jesus offers a glimpse of the Trinity, as well as a wild display of Gods glory and confirmation of who Christ is. The Exodus from Egypt was the great salvation event of the OT, freeing Israel from bondage to the Egyptians. As one prepares to preach on this text, it is important to bear in mind that the Transfiguration of Our Lord is a Christological festival, not so much an occasion for moralism (that we all have mountain top experiences, but must come down). Though it may be more difficult to read a few words in this Gospel account and be similarly astonished, Jesus transformation here is more astonishing that anything weve ever witnessed. The event happens on a mountain, a place of special revelation. Those words, aimed at the disciples, but probably most directly at Peter, are just as relevant to men and women today as they were then. If there was any question as to who Jesus was, there was no mystery about it now: He is the Christ, the only begotten son of God. Moses seems to represent the OT Law, while Elijah represents the Prophets. Moses spoke words of a coming prophet. Maybe the sleepiness of the disciples is emblematic for how often they had missed the glory of Jesus when it shined right in front of them day in and day out throughout Jesus ministry. The first step to such a prayer is stillness and silence, or what should have been Peters response on the mountain. These were not fables or tall tales. TRY SERMONWRITER! These recognized giants of the faith come to point Jesus in the direction he needs to go and to encourage him that down that path lies the salvation of the world. The saying of Peter would then mean that, since the messianic age is here, the group should camp out permanently on the mountain. The three dwellings (9:33, NRSV; booths in RSV) recall those used at the Festival of Booths (or Tabernacles), an annual harvest festival. Jesus exodon leads us into the kingdom of God. Jesus understands our suffering because he suffered greatly in his days on the earth. You fall to the ground trembling, your hair standing straight up. Its not easy to do. In the Bible, when a story takes us up to a mountaintop, its a fair bet that something dramatic is going to happenindeed, its a fair bet that something deeply revelatory is going to happen. When we are tempted to doubt if our prayers matter, we can read Lukes Gospel and see that Jesus had no such doubts. Earlier in this chapter, Herod, hearing of the great works that Jesus was doing, was very perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again. Shortly before the Transfiguration, Jesus revealed to the disciples that The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up (9:22). Thou that dwellest between the cherubim, shine forth: Show Me a token for good: Father, glorify Thy name.". Have you ever known anyone like that? Undoubtedly, they spoke with Jesus of the events in the next few months of Jesus death, resurrection, and probably his ascension into heaven. This is my beloved Son. These convulsions demonstrate graphically the problem that the father has described. Our confidence in Christ is strengthened by this testimony. The story takes place about eight days after the Confession of Peter (9:18-20), Jesus first passion prediction (9:21-22), and his admonitions about following him (9:23-27). Powerful. We see that yet today. While Luke does not tell of Peters protest (see Matthew 16:22), it is clear that the disciples are not prepared to hear Jesus talk about suffering and death. Luke, the first-century physician, describes the problem as demon-possession. In this case this stunning revelation of glory took place well out of the public eye and then, even for those human eyes that did take it in, there was a mixture of confusion, sleepiness, and then reticence to speak of it in the future. The other gospels suggest that this took place six days later. They will fail to understand Jesus warning about his betrayal (9:43-45). At this point in Lukes story, Jesus and the disciples are on the way into the abyss of Jesus passion. A week ago, I was reading in 1 Corinthians 15 in my daily morning reading. That Jesus perhaps needed this boost is testament to his true humanity. But theres more to it than this. This is my Son, my Chosen One. Every once and so often, something so touching, so incandescent, so alive transfigures the human face that its almost beyond bearing. From the very beginning there has been nothing about the appearance of Jesus that would cause you to think that he was anything more than just another boy, the son of a carpenter. Seize the day! Here Peter strikes out. With no human or earthly voices available to encourage Jesus, his Father steps in to provide new voices in the conversation. Perhaps an analogy to explain this is that to see a bolt of lightning strike the earth a mile away and to hear the rumbling thunder is one experience.
